What can one do to get rid of Chronic Hemorrhoids? - Dr. Ravindra B S

Chronic haemorrhoid patients usually present with bleeding and mucus passage in the stools. The way to stop is first is dietary modification. For that we need to take lot of fibres. I tell my patients to take one cucumber, carrot, banana everyday morning and evening, at least 5 to 6 cups of water and 5 to 6 cups of butter milk or tender coconut. In that way water intake and fibre intake is increased. Second important thing is these people should use certain medications to make the stools softer. We usually give some medications to make the stool softer. We give some fibres or powders that will help them to evacuate easily. Number three is sitz bath. Sitz bath means we ask them to sit in medium hot water for at least 4 to 5 minutes. Then once we come out of this medium hot water then we give some ointments to apply inside the anus. The important thing is once they are applying ointment the ointment has to be applied inside the anus properly with a hand or finger. In that way if the ointment is applied the ointment gets into the rectum and the haemorrhoids usually come down. But if it is a grade 3 haemorrhoid continuously bleeding, medications don’t work sometimes we do what is known as endoscopic binding. The third method is if it is completely out, bleeding and if the medications don’t work, endoscopic banding fails then we do a procedure known as haemarrhoidectomy. That can be done with the consultation of endo-rectal surgeon.
